Hi all,
the current rallying rules give a driver an elapsed time over a 5 lap stage. I don't know if there is any provision for a car which, due to mechanical or electrical issues cannot complete a particular stage but may be able to be repaired for subsequent stages. If there is no such provision, I would suggest a default time of , say 90 seconds for any car which suffers 'catastrophic failure' on a stage and cannot complete it. This is a very slow time but still leaves the driver of such a car (mathematically of course) in the game.

Re: Rallying default time suggestion
Steve et al, this has now been addressed in the FRC rally regulations:

Re: Rallying default time suggestion
Steve/Gordon,
I agree with the 90 secs for failure during the race and cannot complete the race.
If you start a race and your braid wire or guide flag comes off as you take off , even before passing the first corner or making half a lap or tire turns over as in my first lap even before I reached the top or back straight as you call it. Will you allow the person to fix it and rerun the sector after every one have completed the course or will that be a 90 secs.
Why I am asking is because no one checks their cars after a course since everyone is required to marshall.
In all other races we have a couple of mins to check our cars and this event does not permit this time fame for checking of our cars.

Re: Rallying default time suggestion
Arden, my feeling on this is that if the problem occurs before the car completes its first lap, it should be allowed to be checked/fixed and re-start the stage. If the problem occurs after completing its first lap and getting a time, the 90-sec rule should apply.
Re: Rallying default time suggestion
Gordon,
I agree with that, seeing we really don't check our cars after a stage.
