RACE REPORT #326 - September 21st 2024 (CMnm, SCnm, F1nm)

We had the great turnout of ten drivers at event #326 for our Clubman, Slot.It Challenge and F1 classes and what a full afternoon of activity it was! Controller five was magically back online, allowing the regular six-car grids and there were many of them, despite two being for less. Peter had also managed to get the big monitor fixed, so all was in place for an action-filled afternoon.

To address the frequent first corner pile-ups we often seem to have, the first matter of business was an experiment in extending the grid positions, pole being the only one that remained put. We moved the grid-two location back 15" from pole and then for each lane, relocated the remaining grid positions 30" back from the one ahead, resulting in the final position being at the entrance to the last turn. But that's okay - there are many real circuits where this occurs, so FRC has now joined them. Best of all, it definitely did as we hoped and reduced those annoying first corner incidents.

The qualifying and racing were once again very close. In the case of Slot.It Challenge, we had so many drivers that we utilised the A and B subgroup option that we've used in the past to give all nine drivers with cars available an opportunity to participate. This basically treats these A and B sub-categories as independant classes where points are concerned, with the A group receiving an extra relative set of points to differentiate the results fairly. I thought I'd have to do some programming to institute this, but I had already built this into the points calculations many years ago when we used to often end up racing "subgroups". Here's the formula:

If(Date>=Date(5;7;2014)
and Subgroup="A";
Case(Starters=6;
9;
Starters=5;
6;
Starters=4;
4;
0);0)

It basically says that if the date is greater than or equal to 5/7/2014 and the subgroup is A, if there are 6 starters, everyone in the race will get an additional 9 points. If there are 5 starters, everyone gets an additional 6 points and if there 4 starters, everyone gets an additional 4 points. Otherwise, no additional points are added to their standard place points. This was clearly agreed on ten years ago and we most likely discussed it beforehand. You'll notice that for the four cars we had in the A group, we each got the standard points plus 4 points.

It was very generous of Stan to donate two bottles of his wonderful cider to the event, which was very much enjoyed by all. My only suggestion is that the next time that we're so lucky to get more, we save it for after the racing. My head was starting to buzz after just one cup, not a good thing for my driving!

Stan, you have to come by and join the fun soon.

The expanded spacing of our new starting grid now extends around the final corner. All we have to do now is black out the old markings and paint on the new ones:

NOTE: Each of these three races is treated as a different class by the software, even though they fall under the umbrella of "Slot.It Challenge" (the software automatically differentiates classes by their name and each one has a different name, hence three classes). The third result graphic with the class name "Slot.It Challenge" is not the total of the previous two, it is for its own race. The points for each of these three classes are added to the "Champion Driver of the Event" points like all the other races for the various classes.

Wonderful evening of fun and slot racing!! Even though some heated “debates” were experienced we all enjoyed the competition and Standley’s cider!!! Thanks guys!! Loud cut tail but enjoyed it anyway… maybe the cider dulls the pain?😂😂😂

Great racing event as usual at FRC !
It was nice to see a good driver turnout, including Merryl, resulting in full grids and in some instances, more than full grids, necessitating a 'B' group . Well done to all involved in getting the monitor repaired. Much appreciated. ! It was also wonderful to have all hand controllers mysteriously working after the failure of #5 at the last event. I always love to see new cars show up and this event didn't disappoint, what with Ian's lovely new Clubman Mustang Shelby GT500 and Slot.it Challenge Jaguar XJR-9, and Peter's lovely F1 Ferrari SF-21. Stan's cider made the event even more special !
The racing in all classes was tight and enjoyable but some on-track incidents show that discussions need to be had to tighten up some areas.
In terms of class points, I'm in agreement with Clubman (except that I should have gotten an extra point for a race 2 car change) and F1. Slot.it Challenge and therefore event's overall points don't seem to add up in my opinion . We can discuss separately.
Congrats to Gordon on winning Clubman and F1 !
Congrats also to Luke and Liam on joint Index Of Performance accolades !
Looking forward to the next event.

Steve, I've added the extra Clubman point to the results for your changing car in the second race. My apologies for initially omitting it - I'd checked the wrong checkbox in the software.

Everyone please read the note that I've added under the Slot.It challenge results that should clarify the points questions.

Gordon,

Great evening at FRC with a Grand number of drivers ...

I was very thrilled to race in Slot.it Challenge and the FC IROC classes 8-)

Plus, it was a pleasure to be of support collecting the tasty Cider Drink from Stanley and by extension helping Peter with repairs to damaged Monitor ...

All in time for this event ;)

Personally, I think this must have been FRC's most complex & detailed Race Report (No.326) from all others :o

It had so many sections to read through. However, was very pleasant going / reading through race details.

That said ... there's one very small detail I noticed, that wasn't included from one of the pictures.
  • SC Race 3 Grid - 1 Gordon/Nissan R89C, 2 Ian/Jaguar XJR9, 3 O'Brie/Mazda 787B, 4 Warren/Porsche 956, 5 Steve/Nissan R89C ...
Image

:arrow: Who is the driver of that No.6 Car ... all the way to the back of grid :)

Luke. Thanks for pointing that out. It’s hard to notice black or almost black cars that far away and around the corner. The future plan to have a rearward second pic should solve that. In the mean time, I’ve added the driver (Liam in both cases) and car names to the report.

Glad to be of help Gordon & good as (picture wise) the idea is ...

The spacing out of slot-cars on the grid ~ to help avoid those (unwanted) first corner incidents / crashes :-/

Straightforwardly ...

The recent pics (RR326) of spaced out cars, aren't looking as good as it used to with all the other race reports :?

Really & truly ~ how you'll are keeping the extra spacing of cars on the grid for actual race is a good one indeed 8-)

Feel you should ONLY close back up the spacing for your famous (front & rear) pics of nicely lined up model cars :D

Think it will be way easier on the eyes watching reports & I'm sure it will be easier for you also preparing them :)
