RACE REPORT #321 - July 6th 2024 (CMnm, SCnm, F1nm)

We had nine slot racers attend Saturday's event for our Clubman, Slot.It Challenge and Formula 1 classes, six of which took part in the races. Amongst those present was Kent, who brought along his beautiful and extremely quick new Scaleauto Porsche LMP car and did some test laps with it after Luke installed a chip for him. Warren also was there very briefly because he had a much higher priority to attend to. Keith came along, but did not race, instead helping with the marshalling.

Before the racing began, we went through checking the under-motor ground clearances of all the cars present and quite a few were found to run foul of the 1.0 mm minimum. We let them race anyway, pointing out the issues to the owners so that this can be remedied both for the offending cars as well as for any other cars that are brought to FRC for future events. Its in our own interest to ensure that our cars pass this test in order to race at future events. A slight resistance with the testing spacer is allowed, but nothing which will make the car move sideways or raise the wheels off the test block. Bear in mind that the tester must clear the lowest part of the motor magnet casing.

Coming back to the racing, we managed to do a good bit of testing and practice and then run qualifying for the three classes, along with two twenty lap races for each class, a total of six races. The racing is getting closer than ever and we had several instances where penalties were applied by moving the offending cars back after they had caused a collision. In some cases just a de-slot that affected no one else directly resulted in moving the errant car back. We really need to come up with a way that is fair, consistent and agreeable for all such situations.

Despite the issues mentioned above, we all had the usual fun and camaraderie that our favorite hobby provides and once again closed up around 7:30 pm.

Here are the usual pics to start things off.

Great event as usual at FRC !
Decent driver turnout and super competitive racing in all classes was the order of the day. The performance of Gordon's Mini in the second Clubman race was a real revelation ! As always, it was nice to see drivers show up with their own new cars, and in this case it was Ian with his lovely Jaguar XJR9 for Slot.it Challenge. It also ran great, a testament to Ian's progress as a tuner ! Another highlight was Kent's new LMP entrant, a Scaleauto Porsche 963. Luke kindly assisted in fitting a chip to it at the venue so it could be tried and wow, is it fast ! Kent was generous enough to let me take a few laps with it and I was blown away by its performance 'out of the box'. It definitely will need some fettling but the potential is amazing.
In terms of the ground clearance issue, I need to go back to the drawing board on one or two of my cars as clearance was minimal and in some cases only sufficient under a part of the motor.
Re distance penalties for de-slotted cats, a decision should be taken in the interest of consistency for future events. My own feeling is that a car which de-slots on its own should not suffer a penalty but in the case of a multi-car incident, the car which caused the incident should be given a distance penalty and the other cars re-slotted in their de-slotted positions.
Re results and points, Ian finished the second F1 race ahead of me but the points show differently, A re-calculation would ne necessary.
Looking forward to the next event.

Hi Gordon,
I think you have the Index Of Performance figures reversed between O'Brie and myself. My calculations have me at two points and O'Brie at one.

Steve, the system works that out based on the results entered. Here are the figures done manually:

Steve: 1 -2 1 1 0 0 = 1
0’Brie: 0 1 0 1 0 0 = 2

Hi Gordon,
the discrepancy is with the F1 results . Here is my calculation:
...........................Steve O'Brie
.............Start Finish Points Start Finish Points
F1 (1) 4 3 1 3 4 -1
F1(2) 3 3 0 4 4 0

Total 1 -1.

Steve, the software has been working the results out properly for years, based on the data entered. The only thing that changes is the results that are entered manually, which is what the IoP uses. Perhaps you can point out the wrong result so that I can fix it. I may have made an error somewhere.

Okay, Steve. I've fixed it. I had you starting 3rd and O'Brie starting 4th in the first F1 race when it should have been the other way around. My error. Thanks for pointing it out.

Hi Gordon,
I'm still seeing IOP points for O'Brie and myself as 2 and 1 respectively when I believe it should be the other way around.
