Magnet-less action

Post by steveaca »

Did some driving /racing last night with Jonathan and (my brother ) Keith. Removed the magnets on Scaley Ferrari F430s and a pair of Keith's old SCX Porsche 935s. It was an absolute blast. Lap times increased considerably but the fun factor also did. Might be an idea to try this at an FRC event, maybe with the Porsches or Lamborghinis. I know Gordon has spoken about this before but I don't think that many were enthusiastic about it. Still worth a try I think.

Hear, Hear! Some of you guys may recall taking some laps on FRC with my Slot.it MacLaren F1 GT RAW, magnetless, and how smooth, fast, fun, and tricky it was. Luke and I subsequently made some mods (hey Luke, I finally got the tires and ride height NAILED!), and it is now a screaming fast monster with magnets. Also fun to drive, but I missed the original so much that I have another arriving in the mail tomorrow! I also have a pair of Scaley Maserati MC-12's. The chassis are so long as to render the stock single magnet almost ineffective. One day I decided to remove the mags altogether. My daughter and I ran them for a bit and it was a blast! Two longtails battling through corners side by side with tails out is a thing of beauty! Talk about learning car control. I can see a whole different tuning emphasis, with tire grip and weight distribution coming to the fore. The additional concentration required definitely ramps things up a few notches: I highly recommend trying a 15-20 lap magless race or two at the next few FRC events!
