Mark Dipchand's new cars

Post by gordon »

Luke sent me this pic of an interesting combination of new cars that Mark Dipchan asked him to source:

Mark is clearly a 007, Mini and VW fan.

Nice. Does he actually drive these cars ?
I would love to have the VW Beetle, fully modified to run in our Mod.Prod. class. If I had one, I suspect that it would end up looking a bit like Silbourne's old racing Beetle.

Steve, the exhaust pipe wouldn't last long on the track, just as his didn't!

A very unorthodox looking exhaust/tailpipe ...

The whole car for that matter and am I correct the left front door (seems to have flung) open going into the corner ..?

Mr. Clark must have been a big fan of the Walt Disney production - Herbie The Love Bug.

Mark D. received this grand collection of brand new slotcars (van and a SUV included) recently and of course - he was in all smiles ...

It was the week before Christmas (2016) when he asked me to personally see about (for him) acquiring this list of items he was viewing, for the longest while at Professor Motor website ...

A list looking somewhat like this below and one may think:

All Scalextric cars are slotcars but not all slotcars are Scalextric ...
  • 1 Scalextric C3371A ...... Volkswagen Sand & Surf Twin Pack cars.
1 Scalextric C3586A ...... Mini Cooper Legends Twin Pack cars.
1 Scalextric C3096 ........ Ford Lotus Cortina car.
1 Scalextric C3268A ...... James Bond 007 "Skyfall" Twin Pack cars.
    1 Scalextric C3664A ...... James Bond 007 "Goldfinger" Aston Martin DB5 car.
Note how one of the Classic Aston Martin DB5 cars includes working gadgets, such as the ejector seat which is activated when passing a special trackside bollard (provided) and the manually push button on the trunk lid for the rear glass bulletproof shield.

Mark told me it will be his prized collection of Scalextric (shelf queen) cars which he budgeted for ... As a Christmas and Birthday gift combination for himself at the end of the (January '17) month.

It all sound like an exciting plan of his and for the consideration - I was more than happy to help in whichever way I can ... Long story short - Mark got everything he wished for - all in time for his birthday celebrations.

He also asked me if I showed off these items to any of the other 132 racing guys and told him Gordon (and Douglas by chance) was the only one I got a chance to ... Plus emailed him a photo of the collection to maybe post on the FRC forum for the rest of the guys to have a view.

So on behalf of Mark D - thanks to Gordon for making it possible.

Luke, you're really Mr. Observant. I had not noticed the left front door before. It definitely is hanging open. Typical Clarkie. The car was very fast though.

Hello Gordon,

You know what else I just remembered - back in the day when Clarkie use to be a teacher at St. Anthony's College ...

That same VW car was stored away in a Auto Mechanic class room and asked him if he left the lid off the engine for better cooling during a race ..?

He mentioned it's a good question but didn't - so other racing drivers won't see type of engine.

Also Gordon,

Wondered if the other guys (for instance Steve, O'Brie, Ramesh, Arden & Alex - to name a few) may know why with the Scalextric C3096 .... Ford Lotus Cortina No.3 modeled replica of the real car ... What's the reason only the bonnet/hood is in black .. :?: ;)

Hi Luke,
one reason why bonnets were painted black 'back in the day' (I clearly remember the original Viva GT) was to reduce glare for the driver. This is why the bonnets were not just black, they were matte black.

Bravo Steve,

I didn't even know that and made a wild guess ... it was carbon fibre when Gordon asked me the same question in person ... He said that type of material wasn't around back then and more or less, what you wrote is what he said ...
