Will this car fit a class?

Post by Killer_B »

Gordon, I am home in the US for a weeks visit and found this Cobra 'Daytona' Coupe amongst my various models and diecast cars. It is a Revell / Monogram, 1/32 scale slot racer. I wanted to know if I should bring it back to Trini with me, to join you some Thursday evening.

Gary, in case you didn't get the PM, here it is as a response to your post:

Hi Gary,

Good to hear from you. That Cobra is eligible to run in our Vintage Sports class for 1960s sports and prototype cars. Unfortunately we ran that class two events ago, which means it's not scheduled to be run again for another 7 weeks, but it's possible to do a few impromptu races for it before then. I actually have one from Revell-Monogram just like it, but the number 5 model. In order to run on a digital track you'll need one of these:

Scalextric C7005 Digital Conversion Chip

You can get it from just about anywhere that sells slot car stuff or even on Amazon. It's just about the only chip that will fit as the Cobra has it's motor installed up front. I can send a pic of how mine is installed to help you install it (or I can do it for you).

You'll probably want to also pick up a pair of silicone tyres like these for better cornering traction:

Indy Grips IG1303 for Monogram Cobra coupe and Carrera Mopar muscle cars

The characteristics of this car on the FRC track are that it has good straight-line speed but not the best brakes (like the real one!). Also, it will tend to flip if pushed too hard in the corners, so you'll have to be careful to drive it within its limits. It won't be super-competitive, but you can still have fun with it. The fastest cars currently running in the class are Slot.It Ford GT40s like this one:

http://www.electricdreams.com/Shop/slot ... 10617.html

They can also use the same C7005 digital chip.

See you when you're back in T&T.

Hi Gordon,
if you're going to have impromptu races, maybe the GT40s could be excluded.

That's an excellent idea Steve,

Maybe even try what Gordon suggested to us ... and if I could remember correctly, it was at the same VS & HS event gone and he mentioned just before the other guys reached - remember. About having a race with some of our other cars (not being used) doing same kind of lap times. I think we can now try this impromptu event with this type class as well.

I say that because:

I'm glad to inform you'll - which all started with that neat looking picture (No.54 Cobra Daytona Coupe) and Gordon having the same type (No.5) car too.

I will be owning one of those same model (No.56) cars with silicone tyres to match - in 2 weeks time from Electric Dreams :)

Believe it or not, the conditions was just right for me, ordering this car - here's why ... By chance, I was placing an order (my $100US budget) at Electric Dreams, noticed this FRC post around the same time, saw a great price offer on this type car (item # 03816) and the silicone tyres available, while watching/having a brand new F1 C7005 chip in front of me (no plans for it atm) and with these 2 items - it sure helped my order to reach the $100 limit :)

Know you guys could relate to what I just wrote and how Gordon's useful info to Gary - I am already knowledgeable too.

In mentioning Gary's name, I will be glad to meet him @ FRC,

Luke

That's cool news Luke. I've always loved the Cobra Daytona ever since I first saw it in a race report in a car racing magazine way back in the '60s. I remember seeing advertisements for 1/32 slot car models of them in my slot car magazines of the day and always loved their look. Here's a Wikipedia link with a bit of the real car's history:

GG - Thanks for providing such interesting info and see how, after all this time - you will be now racing 1/32 scale Cobar Coupes instyle :)

The photo at the top sure did (somewhat) the same for me because look how I went and buy one without any delay :D

I was thinking of getting the red livery (No.59 Cobar Coupe) car at first but I went with the white instead. Looking back at link - I believe its the chrome rims and white livery that did the trick for me.

Who knows, maybe even the price from $55 to $40US ;)

Gordon,

Thank you for the reply. I've been very busy here with family and the new house, so this is the first I am getting to the computer to see the response from you and others.

First, are any of the items you mention available in TT? or do you all have it sent in from US or Europe?

I will look to see if there is anything local that I can pick up. before I leave on Thursday to TT.

Thank you,

Gary...."Killer_B"
