RACE REPORT #161 - April 3rd 2014

Another good night of FRC competition saw twelve drivers take part in various races for the three classes run, Modified Production (MP), American Muscle (AM) and a brand new IROC class thought up and fully sponsored by Luke, Scalextric GT Challenge (SGTC). Amongst the seasoned drivers was FRC first-timer, Brian who competed in SGTC.

Luke B was his usual self, out-qualifying everyone in both MP and AM. The MP race wins ware shared between him and Steve with both cars being inspected at the end since a clear winner was unknown at the time. In AM, it was a very different story, Luke B totally dominating by winning all five races.

In between these two classes, we ran two SGTC races of six drivers each, determined on the roll of two virtual dice. Alex took the win in the first group (designated "A") driving a Ferrari F430 and Jon won the B-designated race in a Porsche 997. These guys will go down in the records as being the inaugural SGTC winners at FRC. In the future this class will be an interesting challenge since the plan is to run six races per group (instead of one), giving each driver a shot at each car for the class championship.

Next event's classes: Class grouping C: Mini Challenge IROC - 6 races @ 20 laps, Rally Car - 5 five-lap stages per car (1 car at a time). Great night of racing as usual. Particularly nice to see Boo there but it was a shame that his cars had problems in both classes. Good also to see Alex come by, even if not to race.Thanks Luke, for thinking up and providing the cars for the Scalextric GT race. Thanks as usual to Gordon for hosting and publishing race report.

Hello Steve,

This is a bit long but just had to let all know how the Scalextric GT cars came about

Good of you (& Gordon) to mention these Scalextric GT cars & I must tell you though, you sort of helped for this to happen. Remember (sometime ago) when you told me how Island Hobbies have plenty of SSD DPR chips in stock..? Well, this endeavour of mines started when I got sick of watching these cars just setting in a box doing nothing and I came up with this idea. It was such a buzz for me setting-up these Scalextric cars for all FRC racers to enjoy... & doing what slotcars do best - RACING..!

Must say also that 4 of these cars went through the Diego Martin/Petit Valley floods in 2012 and wasn't cleaned up until the other day - its about 20 months later. Would you believe I cleaned all 4 cars in one night and didn't even mind (knowing) how I went to sleep the following morning with a big smile on my face. Also, how I knew I turned a bad situation into something good

The most surprising thing with this (one weekend) project though, was how great the 997 cars (even with high center of gravity) are handling much better than the F430s & Lambos..! Not that I'm making it sound like its a problem but something of interest.

BTW, Island Hobbies still have plenty of DPR digital chips (no retro) in stock after buying 6 of them. So, just for the record - I think there's about 20 x 15 (Saloon $135 & F1 $175 respectively) of these DPRs if anybody is interested.

Fantastic job done with those cars Luke. I never would have known that those cars went through the flood. I also really like the idea of racing cars which are absolutely stock (ie . no silicone tyres, stronger magnets, hotter motors and so on). I vote that we keep these cars this way and not let them 'advance' , performance-wise as time passes.
