RACE REPORT #158 - March 13th 2014

After a 2-week break for Carnival, a small turnout of jut six drivers at least meant that no one would miss a race because of more drivers than grid positions for our 2014 group G classes, Group 5 Sports Car and Formula 1.

In G5SC Luke failed to get his Ferrari 512S Coda Lunga running properly, leaving just four drivers to compete, all in Alfa Romeo 33/3s. During practice no one could get within less than 0.2 sec of Luke B's 6.003 sec lap record, but in qualifying Steve just blew everyone and the lap record away by turning a lap of 5.800 sec, almost half a second faster than the next car. Well done Steve!

In F1, Ramesh put his his FC-130-motored McLaren on pole with Arden just 0.033 seconds behind in his similarly-powered Jordan. All six F1 cars were separated by just 0.674 sec at the end of qualifying.

The first and second places of all the G5SC races were shared between Ramesh and Steve, with the next (and last) two positions similarly shared between Arden and I. As has often happened in the past, the point for pole position played a significant part in the final points tally for the class championship win.

F1 turned out to be a series of races where accidents caused some attrition. Races were temporarily stopped then re-started a number of times when some of these pile-up involved several cars blocking the track. Arden's Jordan twice suffered mechanical damage and both Steve and Ramesh had to retire their primary cars and turn to substitutes. Unfortunately for Ramesh, his replacement which ran the two last races failed post-race tech inspection, resulting in disqualification from these races and erased a sure class win.

Great night of racing as usual at FRC. The Group 5 Sports Car race was lots of fun, with Ramesh and I running side by side for several laps at a time. In the end the tie for first place was a very welcomed result. Too bad Luke didn't get his Ferrari running for the race as it showed some real promise in testing before.
F1 was as exciting and crazy as ever, with, I think my Renault suffering the most damage , with the nose cone dislodged (not unusual) and the front suspension totally askew. It still managed to run in this condition until a wire from the guide blade broke loose, possibly as there was no protection for it due to the missing nose cone. Thanks to Gordon's loan of the Brawn, I was able to finish the class.
At the end of the event, there were two ties, one for G5 and one for Champion Driver of the Event. Well done Gordon and Ramesh !
Looking forward to the next event.
Steve
