RACE REPORT #131 - JUNE 19TH 2013

Our 131st (and my 60th birthday) event was an exciting affair. Nine drivers competed and sixteen races were run, six for our Mini Challenge class and five each for Restricted GT and Slot.It Challenge. We continued the single-car qualifying which we had reverted to a couple of events ago and three drivers were caught without a time because of de-slotting on the first timed lap - me in MC, Neverson in RGT and Luke in SC. Because of the relatively large turnout of drivers this meant that each of us missed out on the first race in the respective class.

FRC's IROC Mini Challenge probably featured the most challenging and competitive races, as everyone would theoretically get to drive each car. Despite this, some drivers shone more than others, doing a better job of meeting the difficult challenge of keeping the Minis in the slot under intense competition. RGT saw some more really fast cars from the team Bhola garage, but it was no walkover, as competition in the races was ever-present and incidents played their part. SC was also competitive, although the five race wins were shared between just two drivers. In the end it was a close call determining the class winner.

New Lap Records

We had three new records, one for each class raced!
  • MC - 8.822 sec (Steve, Scalextric BMW Mini)
  • RGT - 5.378 sec (Luke B., Scalextric Porsche 911 GT1)
  • SC - 5.569 sec (Gordon, Slot.It Toyota 88C)

Another great event at FRC. Was really good to see Shane racing again and also Nick , not racing but doing some stellar track marshalling. A few guest laps in his old Ferrari F430 showed that Jimi still has what it takes to do competitive times. Was also nice to have occasional FRC racers Mark, Neverson and JerriLyn participate.
The racing was tight as ever and although my cars weren't as competitive as they should have been in RGT and SC, I had a blast. The fact that there were only 4 points separating the first 2 drivers for the overall win shows how competitive the racing was. Congrats to Luke on the overall win !
As was fitting for Gordon's (belated) birthday, there were some nice eats like salsa dip with chips (thanks Debbie), wontons, Chinese chicken and assorted other goodies. Thanks also to Ramesh and Luke B. for a cooler with cold beers !
Looking forward to the next event.

Gordon,

Here is an interesting point of discussion for all (as we both discussed Wed.19th.) with our routine race nights.

At this special FRC event we did 5 races each in the RGT & SC classes for the first time (instead of our 3 routine races) which turned out quite well even with the MC (6 races) class.

Do you/all think it is possible to have 5 races instead of 3 races per class with our regular race nights..?

Doing the maths:

Special Event - Racing started around 6pm (Total Races - 6+5+5 = 16) and finished (10pm) 4 hrs. later...
Routine Event - Racing starts around 8pm (Total Races - 3+3+3 = 9) and finishes around (11pm) 3 hrs. later...

From the looks of these numbers, it may not be possible to add more race at our regular events.

Not being very optimistic but realistic :)

Way boy GG :!:

I didnt realize you made this change already  on the forum - know we talked about it briefly but...

I only just looked back (by chance) at the class groupings post :o that was a quick change up & like the "...change at the specific event." line.

Guess this will leave us with the freedom to choose the amount of races per race night/classes... Correct :?:

Also, if we all work hand in hand with the time factor... It can be done..!

Luke

GG- Sure you noticed, by adding more races per class - that was how you lost your "very strong" grip with the SC class :|

Your 3 race/wins would have more than done it again for you but your a 3rd & 5th positions in other 2 races out did you  hard luck.

To tell you the truth, it was really hard luck...

You could have pulled off a victory again because that TOYOTA of yours is very quick :D

On the other hand (RGT) I would have been in 3rd. spot (16pts.) after 3 races (Luke B/19pts. & Ramesh/18pts.) 8-) ent but I made sure and put my foot down for a strong victory.

Hindsight would have it - We both prove the good & bad with 5 races... instead of 3 races.

Luke, my racing philosophy has always been to drive as hard as possible at all times. You never know what's to happen so that's probably not a bad approach. This applies to slot cars as much as it does to real cars.

Hats off to Luke B for his great driving, particularly in SC. He beat me fair and square, but that's racing and there'll be more races to come.
