Guide flags

Post by gordon »

Guys,

The current FRC regs only make one mention of guide flags (in the Rally Car section) where it says that any guide flag is allowed. My scratch built Triumph has a guide which fits and works, but is not the one which came with the MRRC Cobra chassis I used. Several of my Slot.It cars have the screw type Slot.It guide instead of the push-on type that they came with. I have a few cars where I made-up a special mount and method for fixing broken guide flag mounts. At least one of my Scaley cars has a different guide flag.

I had never before given this much thought, but technically, all these cars are illegal the way the rules are currently written. I would like to propose that we allow any type of guide flag in all classes (a "general" rule applicable to all classes).

What are your thoughts?

Hi Gordon,
As far as I'm aware, the main benefit of the Slot.it screw-in type guide blade over the regular type is reliability. On the Slot.it cars in VS and SC therefore I'd say that the screw-in type could be substituted for the regular one. On the other modified classes I would also be inclined to allow a change of guide blade. On the standard classes however, (viz. HS and VS) I think that the non-Slot.it cars should be required to run the standard guide blade. Scratch-built cars I think , should run the guide blade fitted as standard for the particularlar chassis used but modified to the extent necessary to make the car driveable. Of course, a true scratch-build would not be based on any particular chassis so any components would be allowed.
On the topic of scratch-builds, I think that certain limitations should be put in place for scratch-builds in the standard classes, eg. motor not to exceed 18k rpm. in HS or 21.5k rpm in VS, rubber tyres to be used, magnet to be limited to say only 1 and with a specified maximum size . If these limits are not established, someone could conceiveably fit a Slot.it HRS2 chassis fitted with a 21.5 k motor and silicones to an MGB and race it in HS !

GG - This excercise with any type of guide flag in all classes dosen't sound like it could cause a problem but the colour of the guide will....

A "general" rule applicable to all classes is good but for all to know:

When converting a car for digital operation note that BLACK guide blades are recommended.

Blue, Red, White and many other guide blade colours are invisible to the infrared sensors in the SSD Power Base.
