Motor racing history quiz

Hi Guys,

Here's a rare pic of eight of the best F1 drivers of the '60s in a group photograph. As was the norm at the time, they also all competed in other forms of motor racing, so their names would appear in coverage of Le Mans, Can-Am and several other motor racing reports of the day.

Image

Amongst them are:
  1. Four F1 World Champions with a total of six F1 World Championships between them
  2. One four-time 500cc motorcycle World Champion and F1 World Champion
  3. Two two-time F1 World Champions
  4. Two Indy 500 winners
  5. The only person to ever have won motor racing's triple crown - F1 World Champion, Indy 500 and Le Mans
  6. Two who raced F1 cars that they built
Here's the quiz:
  • How many drivers can you identify and name? Be sure to indicate where each is in the pic (left to right back row, middle, left to right front row) - 1 point for each identified
  • Bonus points for correctly naming A to F above - 1 point for each complete correct answer
Gordon

(PS: I knew all the answers by just looking at the photo ;) )

Total of 14 points - one for each driver in the pic (8), one for correct answer for A to F (6) = 14.

Only one response allowed per person (first response).

I'll post the results when we have some more responses.

Oh, OK. I thought that A would have been 4 points (1 for each champion identified), C would have been 2 points and D also 2 points.

GG,

Had to outline here (with these superb '60s records of F1/Indy drivers) understanding why the most complete F1 driver in this era - Fernando Alonso not ruling out a future Indy drive.

http://espn.go.com/f1/story/_/id/131666 ... -500-drive

Also quite sure & without a doubt - one of those (present day) Silver Arrow cars in F. Alonso's hands would mean ...

 The man who can stop the notably Lewis Hamilton run for F1 titles :!:

Steve, either these guys are doing some serious research, or they're not very interested in motor racing history.

When you have read about and perhaps seen videos of some of the amazing feats achieved by drivers like these at a time when racing a car could be an extremely dangerous pursuit, a better appreciation is gained for them and you can better relate to racing models of cars of the era such as those eligible for our HS, VS and G5SC classes.

Let me post another hint:

Of the eight drivers, only two are still alive. Two died of natural causes, one in a light aeroplane crash (he was piloting) and three in racing car accidents.

(And no, I didn't have to look that up either! :D )
