Guys,

I'm introducing a new IROC class which will alternate with our Vintage Sports class, starting from the next VS event (ie. it will replace VS at every other VS event so it will not increase the class cycle time). Named Vintage Sports IROC, the chief objective is to have a variety of cars of the vintage sports period from different slot car manufacturers compete against each other in as competitive a manner as possible. Here are the specifics:

Vintage Sports IROC

All cars will be supplied by me and will be prepared to meet the following requirements:
  • Body: Same as for Vintage Sports class. Body must comply with General item 2. Windows may not be tinted - interior must be visible.
  • Chassis: Standard for the particular model.
  • Minimum Ground Clearance: 1.0 mm / 0.040".
  • Interior: Full interior as standard for the particular model, however this may be altered if necessary, but only to the extent required to install digital chip. Must comply with General item 3.
  • Digital Chip: Scalextric brand only.
  • Motor: Up to 21,500 RPM, based on manufacturer's specifications.
  • Gearing: Free.
  • Motor Pod (where applicable): Standard for the particular model.
  • Magnets: Must be located in one of the standard positions for the particular model. Sebring chassis cars may have magnets installed in both standard positions. Maximum downforce cannot exceed 3.5 times the car's weight (3.5 gm downforce per gm of car's weight). Eg: For a car weighing 70 gm, maximum allowed downforce is 70 x 3.5 = 245 gm. For a car weighing 80 gm, maximum allowed downforce is 80 x 3.5 = 280 gm. O'Brie's Magnet Marshal (located at FRC) is the official weight and downforce measurement instrument.
  • Wheels: Standard for the particular model.
  • Axles: Solid steel only. Tyres may not extend beyond body when viewed from top of car.
  • Tyres: Free but must fit standard wheels.
  • Guide Flag: Free.
Qualifying: One VS IROC car will be selected for qualifying on race night and all drivers will qualify using this car.
Race Car Selection: Once qualifying is completed, drivers will roll a dice to determine the car they will drive in all the VS IROC races for the night.

I expect to have the inaugural Vintage Sports IROC event in place of the next VS event, if not before as a special class.

Thanking you in advance Gordon for the use of your immaculate looking VS collection of cars and suppose this is somewhat like how the SGTC IROC cars in the number 1 grouping came about ... :D
  • 1. Mixed GT IROC / Scalextric GT Challenge IROC (alternating) - 6 races @ 20 laps, Restricted GT - 5 races @ 30 laps (270 laps total)
Undoubtedly, this VS racing will be evenly contested & yes, it will not increase the class cycle (and grouping by much) time because this is how the new Vintage Sports IROC class in the number 2 grouping may look ...
  • 2. Historic Saloon - 3 races @ 25 laps, Vintage Sports - 3 races @ 25 laps / Vintage Sports IROC (alternating) - 6 races @ 20 laps, Group 5 Sports Cars - 3 races @ 25 laps (225/270 laps total)
I find all is looking well & in good order too, so would it be A-Okay GG - if you list names of the variety of Vintage Sports cars .. :?:

Hello Gordon,

A minor point I would like to make about the Race Car Selection.
  • ... drivers will roll a dice to determine the car they drive in all the VS IROC races.

Even though I'm reading that the VS IROC cars are so evenly raced tuned, wouldn't it be more thrilling for drivers to race each car once :?:

All for the simple reason - of different racing (driving) styles ...

Luke, Here are the cars I'm looking sat setting up, final six to be determined after testing:
  • MRRC #22 Ferrari 275P (Sebring Chassis, inline FF)
  • MRRC #14 Cobra (Sebring Chassis, inline FF)
  • Revell-Monogram #65 Chaparral 2A (Sebring Chassis, inline FF)
  • Scalextric #4 GT40 (sidewinder FC130)
  • Revell-Monogram #6 Lola T70 (sidewinder FC130)
  • Scalextric #23 Ferrari P4 (sidewinder FC130)
  • Revell-Monogram #5 Cobra Daytona (inline front-mounted FC130)
  • MRRC #3 Ford Mk IV (inline Sebring Chassis, FF)
The reason I'm suggesting that drivers use just one car each for all the races is to allow them to adjust to their car over the six (or however many) races and hopefully get the most out of them. With the rules of this class, I am hoping to see the cars run very similar laps, however there will probably be differences in performance at different points on the track. For example, some may have more acceleration, some more top-end speed, some may brake better, some may handle better. Its really an experiment in doing things a bit different for variety in our racing. Let's see how it goes. We can always make adjustments as we go along.

Your recommendations sounding all good and dandy GG for your supreme collection of 8 VS cars ...
  • 3 - MRRC
    2 - Scalextric
    3 - Revel-Monogram
Me on the other hand - just stirring up ideas/things here and will have to agree (after reading your reply) the 1 car by 6 races per driver is also a very sporty racing suggestion.

FYI if there's any spare parts (eg: silicone tyres, etc) you may need, please feel free to let me know to help out with ... and that said, I would like to donate a new Scalextric C7005 F1 (retro-fit) Digital Chip to the progress of this new IROC class.

GG and others...

My 'inexperienced' thoughts are that the proposed VS IROC Class sounds good. But I do have one suggestion to think of...with your idea to have a driver use one car for the evening to gain confidence in the car and learn its driving nuisances, this I agree. But then I believe you should have to use a different car for the next five race evenings. After six VS IROC race evenings, either you draw again for a new car or just start over again with your first car. I realize this does add some additional paper work to keep track of the drivers and cars from event to event.

Just my thought.
