New FRC class implemented

Post by gordon »

Guys,

The new Group 5 Sports Car class has been put into effect. You can see the specifics in the FRC Classes section of the forum.

During that wonderful era there were several drivers who stood out above the rest, competing in these races even though many of them were also F1 drivers at the time. Amongst these were the great Pedro Rodríguez and Jo "Seppi" Siffert who both drove the frightening Gulf-sponsored Porsche 917s. Their skill and bravery was indisputable as this photo shows, with the two of them going through Spa's fearsome "Eau Rouge" corner side by side - eventually touching - in the wet, whilst the rest of the field of Porsches and Ferraris hold back waiting for the accident which never came:

Here's a 30 minute movie of their 1970 season:

As you can see from the video, those Group 5 cars of the day were not glued to the track... there was lots of power with limited traction and a lot of oversteer as a result. This is the racing that this new FRC class will try to emulate. With motors up to 26,000 RPM and limited downforce, we're going to have fast cars that have to be driven!

This FRC post includes links to several 1/32 slot car models eligible for this class, so get yourself organised to repeat this wonderful period of racing history, in 1/32 scale.

Just for the record guys...

I told Gordon I will be supporting him with this new racing class @ FRC & have already got myself organised to repeat this wonderful period of racing history.

I purchased the Fly (item No.707101) Ferrari 512S Coda Lunga Le Mans 1970 for $48.95 @ Power Slot Cars today - the same pictures posted with Proposed New Class :D

Hi Gordon,
that Ferrari (Peter's) is not legal in current trim. I have to check but I believe the motor is > 26k rpm and the downforce is way over the limit. The magnets are glued in as well so may be difficult to alter. I will check if there is any way I can 'legalize' it as I cerainly want to race in this class. Even it I do legalize it though, it would be an interim measure.
