Group N (novice) drivers, have you thought about owning and racing your own first car? FRC currently has eleven non-IROC classes where you can prepare and race your own cars. These classes can be basically broken down into three categories - Stock, Restricted Modification and Open.

Stock Classes:
  • Historic Saloon (For unmodified slot models of cars based on production saloon/sedan and road going sports cars from the 1960s and 1970s)
  • Vintage Sports (For unmodified slot models of racing sports and prototype cars from the 1960s)
  • Slot.It Challenge (For Slot.It brand Group C cars)
  • F1 (For Scalextric and Carrera F1 cars that come standard with 18K FF motor)
Restricted Modification Classes:
  • Restricted GT (For modern two-door cars which compete in GT racing)
  • Modified Production (For non-GT production cars)
  • Group 5 Sports Cars (For cars classified by the FIA as Group 5 Sports Cars between 1970 and 1975)
  • Rally Car (For rally cars)
Open Classes:
  • American Muscle (For late '60s and early '70s "Trans-Am" cars)
  • GT (For modern two-door cars which compete in GT racing)
  • LMP (For prototype (non-production) cars which compete in LMP racing from 1976 onwards)
The easiest way to get started would be to choose a car for one of the four stock classes. Of these, the class with the most identical car components is Slot.It Challenge. Cars in this class require virtually all Slot.It components: a Slot.It Group C car (chassis and body) running an inline Slot.It motor pod, 21,500RPM Slot.It motor, Slot.It gears, Slot.It chip, Slot.It magnet, Slot.It wheels and Slot.It tyres. No modifications are allowed other than the guide flag which virtually no one changes from the standard one anyway.

So you basically purchase a Group C Slot.It car, install a Slot.It chip and you're ready to go. Eligible models are:
  • Mazda 787B
  • Jaguar XJR12
  • Sauber C9 Mercedes
  • Porsche 962
  • Porsche 956
  • Porsche 962 KH
  • Porsche 956 KH
  • Lancia LC 2
  • Jaguar XJR 9 LM
  • Nissan R390 GT1 (not a Group C car, but allowed)
  • Audi R8C (NOT the racing anglewinder model)
  • McLaren F1 GTR (not a Group C car, but allowed)
  • Toyota 88C
  • Nissan R89C

As with all competitive motor sport, you can learn to tune it over time to get the best performance out of it, but nonetheless, its a great place to start racing your very own car at FRC.

Take the plunge. Owning, preparing and racing your own cars is a much bigger part of the hobby than just racing the IROC classes.
