Proposed 2015 Classes

Guys,

I've posted this here as our Rules and Class Regulations section does not allow comments.

I've been evolving what I feel the class changes for 2015 should be for several months now, making notes of the changes based on suggestions, comments and discussions with drivers. I've also included my own thoughts as reasons that makes sense to me surface. All my suggestions here (shown in blue) are in the interest of closer and fairer competition as well as allowing a range of classes from relatively slow to super fast.

FRC CLASSES

Cars are subject to pre or post-race tech inspection and those not complying are ineligible for competition or subject to disqualification.

Amendments for the 2015 racing season are indicated in blue.

General (all classes):
  1. Cars must have four wheels with tyres and a body.
  2. Car body must be a 1/32 scale model of an actual car, past or present. Body may not be modified in a way which significantly lightens it or renders it indistinguishable from original car.
  3. A driver figure comprising at least a head must be present in the driver position of the car unless the specific class allows the windows to be tinted so as not to reveal the cockpit. Open cockpit cars require a driver and a "shelf"; closed cars require at least a driver head, front and rear glass and a cover over the mechanicals. (With the exception of cars where the windows are tinted.)
  4. All tyres must be of a silicone, rubber, rubber-like or urethane construction. No o-ring or sponge tires allowed.
  5. All tyres must be run DRY, with no traction compounds or treatments added. Cleaner residue or softening treatments must have been removed before placing the car on the track. Any car that leaves a residue on the track surface shall be immediately disqualified and removed from the race.
  6. Non-magnetic weight may be added to cars.
  7. Weights or magnets added to the underside of the chassis must be securely affixed so as to not be dislodged during a race. They must also be completely covered by plastic tape.
  8. The body mounting screws may be loosened. If they are, they MUST BE COVERED with tape to prevent debris on the track.
  9. Any braid may be used.
  10. Where a minimum ground clearance is specified, this minimum only applies to areas under any installed magnets.
  11. Where a maximum downforce limit is specified, this will be checked using the FRC-based Magnet Marshal. When placed on the Magnet Marshal only the car's guide flag and tyres may make contact with the Magnet Marshal. This is a requirement for accurate downforce readings.
  12. Magnet Marshal readings up to 105% of the stipulated maximum are considered legal. Remember, the maximum allowed is 100% with a leeway of up to 105%. Any car over 105% will be automatically demoted to last place.
  13. Any modification not specifically listed for each class is prohibited.
  14. Where the word "Free" is used for any category below, it must still comply with these "General" regulations.
  15. For classes where any form of motor restriction applies, motor make and model must be identifiable so as to ascertain its legibility for the class. (Eg: Leave original label/markings on motor)
  • Scratch-Built (home-built) cars:

    These are one-off cars built by individuals using 1/32 scale bodies usually from plastic model kits from companies like Revell, Airfix, etc. These may use chassis and other components from slot car manufacturers and can include "generic chassis" like the Slot.It HRS and HRS2 and the MRRC Sebring chassis or chassis from a specific slot car. Chassis may also be completely scratch-built and unique.

    The most important aspect of running scratch-built cars is that the bodies and mechanical/electrical components must comply with the regulations for the class they are intended. Mechanical/electrical components include:
    • Motor
    • Magnet(s)
    • Tyres
    • Gears
    • SSD Chip
    Scratch-built cars may compete in all but the "IROC" classes, unless the specific class regulations override this. Examples of classes that do not permit scratch-built cars are Slot.It Challenge and F1. Please see the specific scratch-built regulations for certain classes below.

    • Historic Saloon (HS)
      For unmodified slot models of cars based on production saloon/sedan and road going sports cars from the 1960s and 1970s - see Eligable Cars below.
      • Body: See Eligable Cars below. Body must comply with General item 2. Windows may not be tinted - interior must be visible. Scratch-built Cars: Fender flares up to 0.2 in (5 mm) may be added to the standard unflared body.
      • Chassis: Standard for the particular model.
      • Minimum Ground Clearance: 1.0 mm / 0.040".
      • Interior: Full interior as standard for the particular model, however this may be altered if necessary, but only to the extent required to install digital chip. Must comply with General item 3.
      • Digital Chip: Scalextric brand only.
      • Motor: 20,000 RPM or lower, based on manufacturer's specifications.
      • Gearing: Standard for the particular model. Scratch-built Cars: Must be a 3:1 ratio.
      • Motor Pod (where applicable): Standard for the particular model.
      • Magnets: Must be located in the standard position(s). Maximum Magnet Marshal downforce of 180 gms (105% = 189 gms). Stacking allowed. Scratch-built Cars: Magnet(s) must be in a single location on the chassis.
      • Wheels: Standard for the particular model. Scratch-built Cars: Maximum width of 0.25 in (6.35 mm).
      • Axles: Standard for the particular model. Tyres may not extend beyond body when viewed from top of car. Scratch-built Cars: Track maximum of 2 in (51 mm)..

      • Interior: Full interior as standard for the particular model, however this may be altered if necessary, but only to the extent required to install digital chip. Must comply with General item 3.
      • Digital Chip: Scalextric brand only.
      • Motor: 21,500 RPM or lower, based on manufacturer's specifications.
      • Gearing: Motor and axle gears may be changed.
      • Motor Pod (where applicable): Standard for the particular model.

      • Minimum Ground Clearance: 1.0 mm / 0.040".

      • Motor Pod (where applicable): Standard for the particular model.
      • Magnets: A single magnet (up to 2.5mm thick in the case of bar magnets) which must be positioned in one of the standard magnet locations for the particular model. This location may be modified to the extent that the edges of the magnet are flush with the chassis bottom, however forward and aft position of the magnet and the magnet's x and y dimensions may not differ from the stock model.

      • Body: Must be based on a non-GT production car and must comply with General item 2. Windows may be tinted so as not to reveal the cockpit.
      • Chassis: Free.
      • Minimum Ground Clearance: 1.0 mm / 0.040".
      • Interior: Free but must comply with General item 3.
      • Digital Chip: Free.
      • Motor: 23,000 RPM or lower, based on manufacturer's specifications.
      • Gearing: Free.
      • Motor Pod (where applicable): Free.
      • Magnets: All magnets must be positioned in a single location ahead of the rear tyres when viewed from the bottom or top of the chassis (stacking allowed; see diagram below).
      • Wheels: Free.
      • Axles: Free.
      • Tyres: Free.
      • Guide Flag: Free.

      • Eligible cars:

        To qualify, body must be based on a non-GT car that is constructed principally for retail sale to consumers for their personal use and to transport people on public roads (no commercial or industrial vehicles are eligible), but may be modified by the addition of fender flares/extensions, wings and spoilers. Examples of non-eligible GT cars are Porsche 911/997, any Ferrari or Lamborghini and most cars with "GT" in their names.       Group 5 Sports Cars (1970-1975)
      For cars classified by the FIA as Group 5 Sports Cars between 1970 and 1975.
      • Body: Group 5 Sports Cars (1970-1975) only. See Eligable Cars below. Body must comply with General item 2. Windows may not be tinted - interior must be visible. Scratch-built Cars: Standard for the particular model - flares may not be added.
      • Chassis: Original chassis for the particular model, but may be modified.
      • Minimum Ground Clearance: 1.0 mm / 0.040".
      • Interior: Full interior as standard for the particular model, however this may be altered if necessary, but only to the extent required to install digital chip. Must comply with General item 3.
      • Digital Chip: Free.
      • Motor: 26,000 RPM or lower, based on manufacturer's specifications.
      • Gearing: Free.
      • Motor Pod (where applicable): Free.
      • Magnets: Maximum Magnet Marshal downforce of 260 gms (105% = 273 gms). Stacking allowed.
      • Wheels: Free.
      • Axles: Free.
      • Tyres: Free.
      • Guide Flag: Free.

      • Digital Chip: Free.
      • Motor: 21,500 RPM or lower, based on manufacturer's specifications. "Magnet-effect" motors are not allowed.
      • Gearing: Free.
      • Motor Pod (where applicable): Free.
      • Magnets: No magnets allowed. Any car found to stick (i.e. does not roll/move) to a standard section of Scalextric Sport track when the track is elevated to 45 degrees will be deemed to have failed and not be eligible for use. This can be referred to as the "45º rule".
      • Wheels: Free.
      • Axles: Free.
      • Tyres: Free.
      • Guide Flag: Free.
      No-Magnet Racing Tips

    • American Muscle (AM)
      • Body: Must be modeled after traditional “American Muscle”/late '60s and early '70s "Trans-Am" cars, including the Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, Plymouth Barracuda, Dodge Charger, Mercury Cougar, AMC Javelin and Pontiac Firebird. For the purpose of this class, the Chevrolet Corvette is not considered an American muscle car. Body must comply with General item 2. Windows may be tinted so as not to reveal the cockpit.

Hi all,
in general I'm in favour of the proposed changes, particularly with respect to the HS class as I think that slowing down these cars is desirable. I would even say let's consider reverting to using standard tyres for this class.
As far as the motor changes in RGT and MP go, I would suggest that we make changes to only one class as to re-motor cars in both classes, particularly for anyone who might have more than one car in either or both classes would be quite costly.

Looking at the FRC (recently changed up) class groupings below and for the 2015 Rules and Regulations suggestions ... Other than the IROCs, Rally Car, Slotit Challenge and the OPEN classes. Must say, laid out this way - paints an interesting picture for the suggested changes. In theory, I believe (other than the IROCs & OPEN classes) RC & SC classes went through "The Mill" for all the major adjustment racing these 132 slotcars as is presently. Of course, only if something comes up later on and don't think that will happen in the near future.

The overall suggestions looks somewhat A-okay to me but I didnt realize you could build scratch-built cars in VS and G5SC (plus other) classes too ... My take on this is simple - I don't really have the zeal (at least for the moment) to go build a car from the ground up, nevertheless I will still race my factory built cars (I already have for these classes) and see how it goes from there racing against scratch-built cars.

F1 on the other hand - I believe with the magnet plan arrangement - we can run into some discussion with that ...

Here's the 6 classes (2015 suggested changes) listed for the Motor RPM, Ground Clearance & with the Maximum Magnet Downforce readings ... and in their respective groupings/order.
  • 1. Restricted GT ............... Motor 25K rpm .......... Ground Clearance: 1 mm

    2. Historic Saloon ............ Motor 20K rpm .......... Ground Clearance: 1 mm ~ Maximum Magnet Downforce of 180 gms.
    3. Vintage Sports ............. Motor 21.5K rpm ...... Ground Clearance: 1 mm ~ Maximum Magnet Downforce of 220 gms.
    4. G5 Sports Cars ............ Motor 26K rpm .......... Ground Clearance: 1 mm ~ Maximum Magnet Downforce of 260 gms.

    5. Modified Production .... Motor 23K rpm .......... Ground Clearance: 1 mm
    6. F1 ................................ Motor 18K rpm
I like how the D/Force readings are looking with 40gms apart for HS, VS & G5SC compared to the rpm ratings.

I have not read the email and studied your thoughts, however I did notice in some classes the introduction of downforce to the VS and HS. I would have really liked to see the rules get more user friendly. I know you have a magnet Marshall and it is available to everyone to check their cars. Personally I hate to come on race night to tune a car. I do have a lot more on my plate than before and we were going well with the two classes so time permitted me to tune my cars better. Going back to three classes puts us right back where we started. It may be argued that it takes the same time with shorter races, but it is still an extra car to tune.
Making rules simple and more user friendly allows any other person to race in the class should they choose to. Those classes were best left in there original state stock everything only trued tires. 1mm height restriction.

Gordon the less things to police the better and easier it becomes as well as enjoyable.

I will read the rest and comment as time permits.

In an earlier post, I agreed with most of the proposed changes but after reading and digesting Arden's post, I agree with what he is saying about having to tune cars on race night using the Magnet Marshal. Re stock, ie HS and VS cars, my thoughts now would be similar to Arden's (ie. minimum 1.0 mm ground clearance but with stock, trued tyres). I would, however, offer the option of having free tyre choice on cars with, say, a ground clearance of 1.5 mm or greater. Please note that although this means there would not be a downforce limit, it does not mean that magnets can be added to stock cars as all normal requirements for this class would still need to be met. I think this would achieve the goal of slowing down and possibly evening things out a bit but without the complications of tuning and checking cars with the Magnet Marshal. VS cars could be treated similarly. I think that, in practical terms, it would be difficult to run three Magnet Marshal classes in one night.

Guys,

My primary intent with the suggested changes - particularly in the stock classes - is twofold:
  1. To produce closer, more competitive racing than we currently have.
  2. Use any car (regardless of manufacturer) where the body conforms to the class.
That's it.

Why don't we make some changes to Slot.It Challenge? Perhaps allow NSR, Scalextric and other brands to compete? Oh wait, the class is already very competitive and allows for a range of body types (Group C cars). The class is competitive because every car has to conform to basically identical specs (other than body and minor chassis differences to allow different bodies). So there's no need to change anything here.

Looking at HS, we can accomplish this same competitiveness by allowing, for example, only Scaley Mk I Escorts. Similarly, in VS, only Slot.It GT40s.

But is this what we want? I really don't think so. So if we don't, what's the easiest way to accomplish my two stated objectives above?

If were looking at ease of checking, how about this proposal for HS which also takes into account scratch-built cars. We only need to check the blue items.
  • Body: See Eligable Cars below. Body must comply with General item 2. Windows may not be tinted - interior must be visible.
  • Chassis: Free.
  • Minimum Ground Clearance: 1.0 mm / 0.040".
  • Interior: Must comply with General item 3.
  • Digital Chip: Free.
  • Motor: Standard for the particular model. Scratch Built Cars: Any motor that is standard for a non-scratch-built, HS-legal car.
  • Gearing: Free.
  • Motor Pod (where applicable): Free.
  • Magnets: Must be in a single location on the chassis.
  • Wheels: Maximum width of 0.25 in (6.35 mm).
  • Axles: Tyres may not extend beyond body when viewed from top.
  • Track maximum of 2 in (51 mm).
  • Tyres: Free.
  • Guide Flag: Free.
We can do similar for VS.

re HS and VS classes, I would prefer to see us race cars which are more or less stock. In my view, the latest proposal from Gordon allows (actually in some cases, necessitates) a fair amount of modification. I think that some cars could become even faster than at present. I maintain my suggestion that these cars remain 'as is' , with 1.0 mm ground clearance , standard chassis, motor, wheels, gearing, Scaley chip etc. but with standard rubber tyres,trued/ground as necessary, maybe allowing free tyre choice on cars that have a higher ground clearance, minimum to be decided upon.(Some cars, due to their design, cannot get close to a ground clearance of 1.0 mm.).
VS cars can be given a similar treatment.
