Rally class 45º test

Hi Guys,

We'll be running our rally class in the not too distant future and we need to get the class regulations clear and fair for everyone before then. With this in mind, some weeks ago I performed the 45º test on two cars to see how they compare. Firstly, I set up a temporary 45º ramp comprising a half-straight and some props:

I then did the test with my Group 5 Sports Car Alfa, a car which runs in one of our lowest magnet downforce classes. Here's a video of the test:

As you can see, the low-magnet Alfa sticks to the track and doesn't roll down despite the 45º angle.

Now here's the same test with my magnet-less Alpine rally car:

In this case, you can see that the Alpine rolls down the sloped track.

This is a good illustration of the intent of our rally class, a class which is meant to be for magnet-less competition. I would like to propose that we adopt this to determine the magnetic aspect if a car's eligibility for our rally class. It is very easy for everyone to check his own cars at home using this technique.

Hi Gordon,
the Rally Car rules as currently written, still allow for cars with high magnetic downforce in 'Group B'. Are we going to apply this 45 deg. rule to all rally cars and do away with Group B ?

Now tell me, how do you'll think this type motor set-up will do with the Rally class test :?: :!: :D

Wow ! Would like to see a video of it actually being driven though. With the torque of two motors to the rear axle and no magnets in sight, it must be quite a handful !

Luke, where's the chip going to fit and will it handle the three motors?

Hey GG - I am really not sure at all with this type of (3 motors/1 chassis :o ) innovation & thought this is where you can come in with your judgment, knowledge & expertness :D

Hi Gordon,
I second your proposal for the adoption of the 45 deg. test for the Rally Car class.

Luke et al.,

That triple-motor slot car is very impressive. It reminded me of an article I saw in one of my slot car magazines when I was a twelve year kid back in 1965 . I dug around and found the magazine article and scanned some of the pics:

Quite impressive for a slot car project 48 years ago, eh?

Great ideas all, but did anyone actually see any of these contraptions drive ?

GG - You as a grown man, sure have a memory like a 5 to 11 year old :) Thank you for these personal findings...

Slot car set-ups like these, kind of look like a device from Inspector Gadget & I think if anyone needs to see one of these cars "drive" should take up the challenge and build one..! Wah yuh say dat - because as far back as I could remember its a first timer for me plus quite sure et al ;)

I wonder if Ramesh (above all persons) know about building slotcars like this?

See you'll later.
