Proposed new class

Post by gordon »

Hi Guys,

My mind's been thinking about our racing (as always :)) and two things - one from a long time back, the other far more recent - came together to inspire me propose a new class. The first is the gap we've always had between our Vintage Sports class for endurance racing cars of the 1960s and our Slot.It Challenge class for 1980s endurance racing (Group C). Yes, its that classic period of the 1970s, more specifically the Group 5 Sports Car era of 1970 to 1975 that I'm referring to. There were several manufacturers who built cars for this period including Alfa Romeo, Chevron, Ferrari, Lola and Mirage. However the biggest name at the time was Porsche with their amazing 917-series cars. I've long wanted to see these models at FRC.

The second piece of inspiration came from my recent experimentation and testing with the Magnet Marshal and our lengthy discussions about it on the forum and at a recent race event. Based on that meeting, we agreed not to introduce this method of equalising cars for any existing FRC classes. Well this new class will give us the opportunity to introduce it without adversely affecting anyone's existing cars. Here are my proposed regulations for the class:

Group 5 Sports Cars (1970-1975)
  • Body: Group 5 Sports Cars (1970-1975) only. See Eligable Cars below. Body must comply with General item 2. Windows may not be tinted - interior must be visible.
  • Chassis: Standard for the particular model, but may be modified.
  • Interior: Full interior as standard for the particular model, however this may be altered if necessary, but only to the extent required to install digital chip. Must comply with General item 3.
  • Digital Chip: Free.
  • Motor: 26,000 RPM or lower, based on manufacturer's specifications.
  • Gearing: Free.
  • Motor Pod (where applicable): Free.
  • Magnets: Maximum Magnet Marshal downforce of 200 gms.
  • Wheels: Free.
  • Axles: Free.
  • Tyres: Free.
  • Guide Flag: Free.
  • Eligible cars:
    • Alfa Romeo 33/3
    • Ferrari 312P
    • Ferrari 512
    • Chevron B19
    • Chevron B21
    • Lola T70 Mk III
    • Mirage GR8
    • Porsche 917
The list will be expanded if and when other eligible models appear.

I like the idea a lot, particularly the limitation of magnetic downforce. I'm familiar with several or the eligible cars (Alfa, Ferraris, Porsche etc) but will check out the others such as the Chevrons.

WOW GG!

That is a post (& a half) well proposed... You can see you did plenty research and provided it in a very accurate manner.

Well done and I looking at some of the links, so far - I find I'm leaning to the "Porsche 917 cars" NSR brand :)

I must remind you, that I think it will take some doing to get this new class off the ground... and with this wealth of info you have provided, its a great start for all to see. I will support as much as I can and will start by getting me (after looking at the magnet set up with other brands) maybe one of the NSR Porsches :D

Luke,

Remember... with its fairly unlimited specifications, this is a "tuning class", so you can put any number of magnets anywhere in the car, so long as you do not exceed 200 gms on the Magnet Marshal. Essentially this means that you can get a fairly basic chassis to run quite well since almost everything besides the downforce and motor RPM is free. Here's an inexpensive 26,000 RPM motor that's perfect for the class:

H&R Racing Cobra Motor - 26,000RPM - Mabuchi Replacement Type - Double ended Plain 2mm shaft - Compatible with home racing wall pack power supplies

BTW guys, I suggest you do enough research on any car you plan to buy to determine the chassis make-up. For example, some of the Fly models use stub axles in the front and this is not the best setup. You can Google the models you are interested in, adding the word review. For example google sloter ferrari review. You can also just search for the model and have Google show images. These techniques should give you a good idea of how the chassis and running gear of each car is configured.

Another note on Fly cars. They have recently introduced their "Alpha" chassis, an inline chassis featuring complete front axle (not stub axles) and three magnet positions. The car appears to come with two magnets standard, however because of the magnet regulations for this class, this is not too important. Here's their new Ferrari 512S (pic courtesy Electric Dreams):
