RACE REPORT FOR JUNE 6TH 2012

With yet another shaky situation whereby there appeared to be only three or four drivers able to race (based on the poll I use to decide on whether or not to go through all the prep work to host an FRC event), I had cancelled this week's racing. However, through Luke's efforts at contacting drivers, we managed to confirm and eventually have eight racers and so the the event went on.

Classes scheduled were Ferrari Team Challenge and Modified Production. The practice session before the races revealed a bit of a disparity in the performance of the Ferraris, with the two yellow cars being the most difficult to drive and therefore the slowest. The irony of this was that, with the current system, the fastest qualifier and his team-mate(s) would have to drive these two cars! With the new revised FTC regs, car choice for qualifying was based on the roll of a dice and the team drivers were determined from qualifying times. This in turn established the drivers for each specific car. The end result was the following:
  • Scuderia Giallo (Yellow - car nos 1 and 2) - Myself and Dougie
  • Scuderia Blu (Blue - car nos 3 and 4) - Luke, Aaron and Kerwin
  • Scuderia Rosso (Red - car nos 5 and 6) - Steve, Arden and Keith
As the Ferrari races got underway, the competition proved to be fierce. There were moments when two (or more) cars would do a number of laps side-by-side till either traffic or a deslot would finally separate them. We also saw team tactics being effectively used to keep faster cars at bay, with the two team drivers lapping next to each other and blocking both lanes. I had a bit of difficulty with my Ferrari when it retired in the first race with a slipping spur gear. The following race it developed a loose rear wheel, the result of the hasty gear repair job. In the third race the gear started slipping again, but I managed to nurse it to finish fifth. The problem was finally solved by replacing the whole rear axle with one I had buried amongst my spares. Aside from this, the rest of the Ferraris all ran without trouble. Although there was a mix of placings in the six races, Kerwin proved dominant in the class, winning half the races outright for Scuderia Blu!

We had four drivers with Modified Production cars - three Mustangs and Luke's Seat Leon. Unfortunately for Luke, the Seat blew its F1 chip in the second race, proving that finding a balance between power and magnetic downforce when running the F1 chip is a challenge. For the final race he drove Zoƫ's fast Audi TT.

New lap records
  • Ferrari Team Challenge - 6.783 sec (Gordon, Scalextric Ferrari F430)
  • Modified Production - 6.144 sec (Gordon, Pioneer Mustang Notchback)

Congratulations to the winners.

Next event's classes: Porsche Cup - 6 races @ 30 laps, Historic Saloon - 3 races @ 30 laps (270 total laps for all classes). Don't forget to see the updated fastest times for the FRC classes to know what the benchmarks are for your cars. Also of interest are the updated class average qualifying times.

See you on the circuit...

Great race report as usual Gordon, but
even more impressive than the report itself is how quickly you succeeded in publishing after the event . Thanks !

Gordon,

Thank you for yet another enjoyable race report. I must say, FRC's 2nd. FTC race meet was even more entertaining than the 1st. which also means it will only get better with time... Yes, we all noticed the cars was not evenly matched (with the new 20K rpm motors & M2 Silicone tyres) as we would like it but all in all a racing battle was on for who had what! The good news though, we can more than fix the situation with the 6 F430's by putting everyone/our expert abilities together with the building of 1/32 slot cars ~ after all its one of the main reasons why we race anyway...

In the MP race with me blowing my SSD F1 Chip, turned out to be a good in the long run for one & all with the setting up of RPM vs DOWNFORCE ~ It was kind of you, at the time to look into this matter and consider $$$ and plan to make changes with the regs to suit this situation.
