RACE REPORT FOR APRIL 19TH 2012
After a number of text messagess back and forth between myself and a group of FRC drivers, we eventually decided to meet at FRC and make a decision whether or not to race based on the turnout and the weather. Yes, it seems that there no longer is a real dry season in these climes as it continued to rain for most of the day and into evening. Ultimately though it basically held up except for the odd niggling drizzle and five drivers hit the track to qualify for the scheduled Lambo Series and Vintage Sport classes. I suspect that Luke's rather hot "mango chow" may have been an added incentive for drivers turning up in such inclement conditions and it certainly went down well in between fast laps on the track.
Our LS races were run in the normal fashion, with each driver doing a race in each of the six cars, a great way of levelling out the field. As usual, this produced some very close racing and at the end of the six races it could have been almost anybody's championship. In the fourth race, the sole magnet in Alex's Lambo came loose making the car undrivable in the corners which quickly demoted him to last place in the race. To keep him in the run for top points, we agreed that everyone's lowest-points race result would be excluded from the championship points total, so the car was repaired and racing resumed with everyone in with a chance to win. One look at the results, with the mix of positions from race to race, tells the story of how close things would be in the end.
VS was little different. If there were an owner's championship I'd have won it easily with four of the six contenders driving cars from my stable, but that's not how we do it at FRC. As things heated up it became a two-battle race for the championship between Alex, Dougie and myself at the front and Luke, Steve and Kerwin behind. In the end it was the man with the coolest head that took the honours and, although his car wasn't particularly fast, he was definitely not lapping slowly!
New lap records
We saw two new lap records set during qualifying, one for each of the classes run:
Congratulations to the winners.
Next event's classes: This will be our 100th official event at FRC. Please check the Forum to help plan and be part of this landmark occasion. Finally, don't forget to see the updated fastest times for the FRC classes to know what the benchmarks are for your cars. Also of interest are the updated class average qualifying times.
See you on the circuit...
