Race report #80 - Thursday 7th July, 2011

Post by gordon »

Hi Guys,

With a turnout of ten drivers (not counting Ray who was present for practice, but had to leave early and therefore did not race), the night promised a lot of action and did not disappoint. For the two FRC newcomers in the mix, both named Keith, it was a bit of a baptism of fire. Classes run were Porsche Cup, Historic Saloon and Vintage Sports, the former and latter both being split into subgroups A and B with five drivers each.

Once again, with the exception of Laird in Porsche Cup (B) who is getting better and better each week, fastest qualifiers were not the winners. No, it was not all about trying to do the fastest laps, but more of being steady but quick enough with minimal de-slotting. One of the best battles of the night occurred in Historic Saloon when all six cars ran several laps nose to tail and side by side with lights ablaze. Talk about driver stress!

Stepping back to earlier in the evening, FRC was graced by a visit from O'Brie and his US-based brother Brian. Back in the old days when O'Brie and I were just boys racing at his home track, his older brothers Michael and Brian were the experienced slot car drivers of the day. Well Brian took to the track for the first time in about forty years and, after a few practice laps, put down a good beating on his little brother! For O'Brie himself, it was his first drive on the "new" FRC and he hinted that it won't be his last. Hopefully O'Brie, we'll see you soon to take part in a full FRC event.

Having had a night of fun and on-track frenzy, the last race concluded around midnight. After lots of old talk and a few more beers, I chased last hangers-on around 1:00 AM.
