RACE REPORT #329 - November 9th 2024 (Rally Car, Time Attack)

Ramesh joined six other drivers for our second Rally event for the year, to which we added a new Time Attack class as a second related category. As attendees know, we run the rally class a single car at a time over a rally stage comprising five timed laps, with drivers using different cars. The Time Attack category was done similarly, however it differed in that the same car was driven by each driver, again over five laps.

We initially planned to use one of the newly Luke-refurbished FRC Ferrari Challenge IROC cars for the Time Attack, however Ram offered one of his quick Peugeots and this was used instead. Whilst both categories provided their own challenges, the first having a variety of different cars, the Time Attack elimited the car variable, putting all the drivers on an equal footing. As the results below show, this made for some interesting surprises. Congrats to Keith who did the fastest lap in two of the three Time Attacks!

The competition provided a challenge to all and the event turned out to be a great afternoon of driving. Time Attack is sure to be included for future rally events.

Great event as usual at FRC !
I really enjoy the rally events and this event was no exception. As said before, I very much enjoy seeing new cars turn up to race (or in this case rally) for the first time. In this case, it was Peter's lovely new Alpine A310 and Volkswagen Golf making their debut. It was also the competion debut for my Impreza S14 hatchback. This car has appeared at FRC on previous occasions but never actually competed.I wanted to give it a run in full 4WD configuration and must say I was quite pleased with its performance in testing. In the actual competition I didn't manage to get the best out of it but I know that the potential is there, I enjoyed driving Peter's Alpine in Stage 2 but the car needs some fettling. Performance was credible though, given the fact that the car only arrived in T'dad. on Friday evening and arrived at the Rally event with absolutely no testing being done. My trusty old Peugeot 406 was called into duty for Stage 3 and as usual, put in a very decent performance.
I was really looking forward to the Time Attack event and particularly to driving one of FRC's IROC Series Ferrari F430s, especially as Luke had so kindly checked and serviced them. Alas, this was not to be and one of Ramesh's cars was used instead. The session was very enjoyable nonetheless and the times ended up being very close. I'm sure whatever problem the F430s had will be sorted out before the next Rally event when the Time Attack session will hopefully be run again.
Congrats to Ram on winning both the Rally and Time Attack competitions.
Looking forward to the next event.
Steve
