RACE REPORT #313 - Jan 27th 2024 (CMnm, SCnm, F1nm)

We had a good turnout, which included O'Brie's son Liam, for our second 2024 event in as many weeks. Initial very unusal problems with the SSDC software kept proceedings back for quite a while. It eventually decided to fix itself and we still do not know what caused the problems. We also had a section of the inner lane of the track starting from the back straight all the way on to the Carousel which had slightly lower power than normal. The outer lane had substantially more power and this equalised the lanes, making the racing quite interesting. Despite these issues, we able to complete two races for Clubman and one each for Slot.It Challenge and Formula 1. It was a good event nonetheless, everyone having fun, along with a few drinks and snacks, including a tin containing varieties of magnificent chocolate cookies supplied by our host Peter.

A point of note is that you'll see that there are no grid pictures for Clubman race 2 and no podium picture for the only Slot.It Challenge race. These omissions are largely because of the distraction I had with the computer issues. As a result, I had to guess the names of some cars and drivers for the report. I hope I got them right. To avoid these problems for future events, we need to start back writing down the information on the forms I used to print.

Here are a few pics to get started:

Once again Ian had a brand new car at FRC, this one a Ford Mustang for our Modified Production class:

Great afternoon/evening as usual of racing at FRC. Nice to see the fairly decent turnout, including new racer Liam, even though there weren't enough cars for everyone to race all classes. My Nissan R89 developed a weird electrical issue which I suspect is chip related. I had hoped to race this car and be able to lend someone else my Toyota 88C for Slot.it Challenge but this was not to be. The Toyota seemed to want to wag its tail more than a friendly puppy and was therefore a bit of a handful to drive. Was great fun though, piloting a Group C car in the fashion of a WRC one ! I was quite pleased with the performance of the 240Z in Clubman class and thrilled that it would go on to win its debut race. In the second Clubman race, I opted to use my other Nissan/Datsun, the Skyline, to take advantage of the extra point awarded for a change of car. Gordon had the same idea and chose his Mustang. Wow, what a battle we had, racing side by side and nose to tail for laps on end. I thing it was a little past midway in the race when the dreaded right-hand cramp set in for me and with it went all hopes of keeping up with Gordon, now having to drive with my left hand. Was still glad to finish second and with it, take the Clubman title. This class is one of my favourite classes now, one of the reasons being the variety of cars in the class. In F1, there was just no competition and Gordon walked away from the field.
Congrats to Gordon on winning Slot,it Challenge and F1 classes and also taking Index Of Performance accolades. Well done to all other drivers that participated.
Again, thanks to Peter for hosting.
Looking forward to the next event.
