Rally Class format amendment proposal

Post by steveaca »

Following this morning's shock announcement re reverting to the old method of measuring ground clearance for rally cars, I would like to propose the following :
Let's have two classes of rally cars, one adhering to the current (amended) specification for those who want to chase ever decreasing lap times (which in my view, could soon be approaching those of Historic Saloon cars) . We could call this class the WRC Class. We could also have a new, slower class, with lap times closer to what were being done when the class was first instituted. We could call this class Group A.
My idea for specs. for the new Group A would be as follows:
-in general, the cars could be similar to the WRC cars except for the following:
-motors limited to 18,000 RPM
-1.0 mm ground clearance to be measured with the car upright while on a standard piece of Scalextric Sport track.
-no F1 wheels allowed.
Such cars would, in my estimation be quite a bit slower than the current crop of super rally cars.
In terms of the actual running of the event, I propose that for this new class to not add any time to the event, a driver may only compete in one class for the evening, such class to be declared at or before the time of scrutineering. We could then run the stages as usual and at the end, declare a winner for each class.

Hi all,
I haven't seen any responses to this. Could we give it some consideration for the next time we run our Rally Class ?

Steve, I have no issue with this on the face of it. The questions that come to mind however are, how are points going to work and will there be a minimum number of cars in either class to constitute a points scoring competition? Will there be a reduced number of points when there are fewer than six cars in each rally class as we have for the other classes? If there is only a single car in one of the classes, will it still receive points?

Steve. We are at a stage where we are slowly heading back to the slower non magnet classes!

You suggestion to quote:”In terms of the actual running of the event, I propose that for this new class to not add any time to the event, a driver may only compete in one class for the evening, such class to be declared at or before the time of scrutineering. We could then run the stages as usual and at the end, declare a winner for each class.” This Is the way to cope with this and having two rally classes .....well I have no problem with that with one exception! The bit about a driver only competing in one or the other. We introduce 2 rally classes to go along with the SB, Clubman and BTCC. So we have 5 no/low mag classes ....Again, I see no problem with that, as long as they do not overlap each other too much. We already have a SB car preforming well enough to give the higher class Clubman a run for their money! We need to think this through before implementing it! But after having so much fun last Saturday I say we go for it

I'd be a very happy camper if, as O'Brie suggested, we have two rally classes. The issue with this would be adding another class to an already full complement of classes. One suggestion would be to combine two currently raced classes in one race, as we had done at one time with Vintage Sports, having the prototype and GT classes racing together. This could then make way for the introduction of another class.
As per my original suggestion of running two rally classes concurrently, I think Gordon's questions re awarding of points and minimum number of cars to constitute a class are valid and need some thought.

Back to my suggestion of running two rally classes concurrently, how about this:
There would need to a minimum of three drivers in each class in order to have the two classes run.
As happens in real racing, sometimes drivers in a lower class would move up to a higher class if that class is not fully subscribed. The reverse cannot apply however.
Similarly, I would propose that once there are any drivers in the higher class present and there are not enough drivers in each class to run the two classes together, the faster (WRC) class should be the default one.
More thoughts to follow.
