RACE REPORT #255 - July 12th 2018 (RC, SC, F1)
A good turnout of nine drivers came out for our Rally, Slot.It Challenge and F1 classes event. Although threatened being cancelled by projected islandwide rain and some flooding, the competition went on and it was a good thing too, as the rally runs and the races were very competitive and enjoyed by all.
Eight of the nine attendees took part in the rally stages which were very close, with some surprises and sub-eight second fastest lap times being recorded in each of the three stages. Newcomers David and Anthony seemed to enjoy the challenge of driving magnetless cars against the clock to see who would be fastest and they did a pretty good job as FRC digital rally novices.
The Slot.It races were also very close and all drivers but Steve were able to enjoy some good racing action. Steve's Nissan R89C unfortunately developed chip issues in the first race which continued in the second, so he had to retire it at that point. It was good to have Alex driving again, sharing Ramesh's quick Nissan R90CK with Luke. In F1, the races were also quite close, especially in mid-field. My Scalextric McLaren again developed an old problem where it would understeer straight off the middle of the hairpin into the outer barrier, so I retired it after finishing last in race one, replacing it with my slower but more stable McLaren "F1 prototype" with which I had some good scraps with Richard.
At the end of the night's competition, it was a toss-up about who would take the overall rally win and even the event's Champion Driver.

Hello Gordon,
I was thinking about FRC RD number 255 and it made me realize (a coincidence with) the last two digits - is my age this year
When I first started racing SSD at FRC I was just 45 (2008) and look how the RD245 gone already but mind you, since ‘08 never forgot how I was blown away by your tremendous slot-car operations.
Also observing how well you raced your Rally Car after a crash (at this event) along with the other close competitors made me think how far ahead each one of you’ll are setting 40 seconds slot-cars in 5 laps and know for sure there’s no catching up with that time.
With the World Cup Finals today (July 2018) ten years have gone and remembered other World Cup Finals before ...
Sure you know where I’m going with this ... because I had to “dig deep” staying awake racing on Thursday night. Plus believe you noticed when I asked to help start putting away the track and someone said not yet ... Sorry I decided (as it was so late) to wish everyone good night - which you know is unlike me through the years.
However the long and short of this writing ...
Looking forward to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but not too sure how often I will be racing slot cars.
Luke

Great night of racing as usual at FRC.
It was nice seeing a fairly good driver turnout, including hopefully new regulars Anthony and David as well as fairly new but now regular Richard. Was nice to see Anthony even going so far as to bring along a fully race legal, chipped Slot.it Challenge car. Well done to Gordon on getting that Alpine to work so well on the rally stages, clocking sub-8 second best lap times in every stage. Congrats to Gordon on winning the overall Rally class, to Luke on winning the Index Of Performance and to Ramesh on winning everything else.
Looking forward to the next event.
Steve

Thanks Steve. I actually won Rally and Slot.It classes. My F1 cars were just not up to the task this time and let me lose too many points to get the Champion Driver win. Congrats to Ram for winning it.steveaca wrote:Congrats to Gordon on winning the overall Rally class, to Luke on winning the Index Of Performance and to Ramesh on winning everything else.

Luke made a comment at this point asking a question which I thought should have its own topic. You can see the topic with his question and all responses to it here:
