Race report #63 - Thursday 13th January, 2011

Hi Guys,
Ten drivers turned up for our inaugural Porsche Cup event and what a lot of fun we had! With the focus on making things as fair as possible, each car was set to a controller for the night and everyone rolled a virtual dice on my iPad for choosing a controller/car to qualify with. With ten drivers present we split the races into groups A and B with five drivers in each group. Grid positions for race one in each group were based on qualifying times, with pole taking controller/car one, second controller/car two, etc. For each race thereafter, drivers rotated to the next controller/car so that after five races in each class, everyone had done a race in each car.
Interestingly, there were differences in the performance and/or throttle response of just about all the cars - some cars handled slightly better than others, some were lightly quicker in a straight line, some accelerated away at the slightest touch of the throttle while others were more progressive. As a result, drivers had to adjust their feel for the car in each race and drive accordingly. Nicholas dominated in group A, winning four races but placing fourth in one. Dougie did similarly in Group B, winning three races with a fourth and a second in the other two, so kudos to them both. Despite this, racing was very close all night, with first and second places being separated by less than a second on more than one occasion!
Overall, everyone agreed that the class is a success and I know that those who were not present will enjoy themselves when they do come by to try it out.
A few of you expressed an interest in analyzing points by controller/car so here they are:
Looks like car 1 (the orange Porsche last night - bodies will be swapped around for each event) definitely had a performance edge. At the other end of the spectrum, car 3 (green Porsche last night) appears to be the worst performer, but who knows the real reasons?
Congratulations to Nicholas and Dougie on their class wins.
Next event's classes: Vintage Sports and F1 - see the regulations here (date to be announced).
See you on the circuit...
Gordon
