FRC 2016 End-of-Year Special Formula Libre Handicap Event

FRC will be having its final event for 2016 on Saturday 3rd December. This will be a special event for any full-bodied cars, regardless of body type (hence the term "Formula Libre"). Open-wheel cars are excluded. Cars will be raced in time-bracket categories. In addition, races will be run on a handicap basis with slower cars starting before faster cars.

Here are the special regulations for this event:

Class Name: Formula Libre Handicap.
Eligible cars: Any full-bodied car. Open-wheel cars are excluded.

Procedure:
  1. All cars will be qualified in the normal manner, one car at a time over three timed laps. This is a significant part of the event's activities because drivers will get full race points for their qualifying grid positions and with the anticipated number of car entries, its likely to take up half of the total time for the event. Cars with lap times under 5.0 sec will not be permitted to race.
  2. Once all cars have a qualifying time, the races will be run in groups of six cars starting with the fastest six eligible cars (group A), then followed by the next fastest six (group B), and so on.
  3. Race laps:
    Group A - 150
    Group B - 130
    Group C - 115
    Group D - 100
    etc.
These race lengths should all result in approximately 15 minutes of racing per race.
  4. Where any car's fastest race lap is less than 95% of its qualifying lap, such car will be demoted to last place.
Handicapping:
For each race, cars will start in reverse grid order, separated by a calculated handicap time. Each car's "total race time" will be calculated by multiplying its qualifying time by the number of race laps, minus five (we want to have a few open laps for everyone). Their handicap time will be this time minus the pole car's total race time.

For example, if the pole car's qualifying time is 5.2 sec and the race is 150 laps, its calculated total race time is 5.2 x 145 = 754 sec. Now if the 6th car's qualifying time is 5.95 sec its calculated total race time is 5.95 x 145 = 863 sec (rounded). Subtracting the pole car's calculated total race time from the 6th car's calculated total race time gives the 6th car's handicap time (863-754 = 109). The 6th car therefore starts 109 sec before the pole car.

Here's an example chart showing the car start time intervals:

Its important that you bring along cars with varying lap times, otherwise you may only end up doing one or two races.

So, grab a bunch of your cars of varying lap times and come on out to the 2016 FRC finale for a great event packed full of unusual competition. Track opens at 3:00 PM.

It's going to be slot racing experience you won't want to miss!

Hi Gordon,
re calculating time intervals for cars starting after the first (slowest) car, I think the calculation should be adjusted as follows:
-Race time should be qualifying lap time x (no. of laps +1).
Using the example of your 150 lap race below, the slowest car's calculated time would be 145 (this is 150 - 5 as suggested) x 5.95 =863 seconds. This is fine.
The next slowest car's interval however, is where I think the adjustment is needed. You have its calculated time being 145 x 5.8 =841 seconds, therefore this car should depart at 863-841 = 22 seconds after first car.

We must remember that if this car is starting from pit lane, the first time it comes around would not be recorded as a completed lap. That would come on the next lap. All cars that therefore start from the pit lane would have to do an extra lap. To compensate for this, my calculation would be as follows:

Next slowest car's calculated time should be 146 (instead of 145) x 5.8 =847 seconds. Using this calculation, second car would start at 863-847=16 seconds after first car.

Really looking forward to this event. I will hopefully have cars that would be able to compete in a few races.
Re food, I think it would be a good idea if we each brought some item already prepared to share, rather than to have actual cooking taking place.

How about we also have an extra 'lagniappe' race of, say, 50 laps for non-magnet cars only, all other qualifying and racing procedures remaining the same ?

AOK Steve but some collaboration is surly needed and will try to make a long story short plus taking T&T $$$ guava season into consideration.

I believe (and with 3 days to go) it's just left up to you, Ram and myself to maybe pull off a FRC menu ..?
  • Of course whoever wants to contribute (and with the exception of Gordon) - can say so here.
Now other than the drinks section - which we all normally see about bringing whatever we drinking.

I am planning to bring a large cooler with ice - keeping everybody drinks cold in one section. So whoever is bringing their drinks - there is no need to bring ice ... Plus a bottle of homemade (Dart Vader) pepper sauce, a surprise (fruit in season) chow and a medium size garbage box/bag keeping a clean scene around FRC.

I must mention Ramesh did asked me to organize a meat order (of Steaks, Ribs and Shrimps) but we agreed - some days later - not to again because there isn't enough time preparing these meat dishes for this Saturday at FRC.

Making a plan ~ I had a light conversation with Gordon yesterday and concerning the food menu - I suggested curry chicken and roti skins for Saturday's event and he said that sounds good ...

So maybe we can call each other sometime today to organize a food menu ..?

Hi all,
my idea was that everybody would bring some item to be shared, in which case we would likely have a real mix of different items. I was planning to bring some jerk chicken, cut into bite-size pieces. Of course this would have to be ordered.
If we are thinking along the lines of a meal, some more co-ordination would be necessary. I'm okay with the idea of curried chicken and roti but the issue would be how much to get as we don't know how many people would be coming. I have neither the time nor the culinary skills to organize the curry but if we decide to go this route, I'd be happy to order roti skins or 'buss-up shot' as I believe Hott Shoppe would take an order.

Okay all and as planned phone calls were made today by Steve, Ramesh and me ...

Having shared info (and other ideas) between us ~ a simple decision was made where everyone can bring something (of their choice) to eat at the table.

For the record and who's doing what - the menu (eats) looks like this so far.
  • Ram - BBQ Chicken instead of Chinese and fried wontons
    Steve - Jerk Chicken
    Luke - Pickled Ambarella Chow
Feel free to add to the list above :-)
