RACE REPORT #357 - April 11th 2026 (CMTBnm)

So we had our three hundred and fifty-seventh event, this one for just our Clubman class and despite some hiccups, it turned out to be a very competitive and enjoyable event for everyone.

Here's a little background. The Clubman class has been around for a number of years and because of the popularity of the era and type of cars permitted, we as a group have accumulated quite a large number of eligible cars. The problem is that, in order to be competitive, we almost always race our fastest cars and a lot of really nice cars are seldom if ever raced.

The solution we came up with is to have a full race day dedicated to only the Clubman class, broken down into three separate sub-classes A, B and C (fastest to slowest) based on their qualifying times. These sub-class times are calculated by taking the fastest qualifying time of the day and adding 0.5 sec to it to make up class A, cars up to 0.5 sec slower than that going into class B and cars slower than that going into class C. We also set a fastest permissible time which is 0.2 seconds under the lowest time for each sub-class. Anyone going quicker in a race is immediately disqualified from that race. We actually had no disqualifications.

This being our first event using this structure of racing, we encountered some hiccups, the main one being the length of time it all took, the majority of this being because we qualified one car at a time over five laps. This was done twenty-eight times, once for each car present. We've already decided to change this going forward. At the end of the day however, it turned out to be a very enjoyable event for all. We got to race competitively and even win with cars we'd never normally race at all.

We ended up having four fully-subscribed races, with the two final ones having just Peter, Steve and myself compete. We finished racing and packing up at around 8:00 PM.

Great racing event as usual at FRC ! I really like this class and have been looking forward to this event very much from the time it was conceptualized. It didn't disappoint !
The qualifying was expected to take longer than usual and this was the case. Even this however, was lots of fun as we got to drive, if not actually race many cars that don't see track action at all . It was great to see an Anglia race at FRC ! I think this might have been the first time for that. I know Pete has plans for it and expect that it would be a bit quicker the next time it is raced. O'Brie somehow couldn't seem to get his Mini to handle properly although it showed great straight line speed. I was very impressed with his E-Type however. Most of the other cars present performed about as expected.
Nice to see Luke doing some testing of his Rally car. Hopefully we'll see it in action at the next event for that class.
Congrats to Gordon on taking both the Index Of Performance and Diversity awards.
Looking forward to the next event !!

This is the 5th FRC Racing Event for 2026 ... and out of the five times, it's my second (B2B) visit at events 8-)

The first visit (RD356) was a surprise one and the other (RD357) was planned ;)

That said, I did mention (late 2025) how I lost that thrill of setting up SSD models and will not be continuing at races.

However, a few of you guys (notably Gordon & Ramesh) do a superb job, keeping me involved in the SSD & Analog 132-Racing Hobby :)

To the point of ... still setting up a few of my own cars and have no choice, but to come by the diffrent tracks and ... Have ah GO at RACING :P

It is a special feeling when you know - you're a welcome person :D

All in all, it's great to see how much effort you fellas put into FRC activities, and a perfect example with this (recently held) CMTBnm event.

Personally, I was surprised how much time I got (on the track) to test out my Ninco Seat Leon No.54 Rally Car and how I did a striking 8.5 sec. BLT ... very early with testing & it's known as an excellent result.

Image

Racers, Peter and Gordon did get a chance to test drive RC model (8.6 & 8.8 sec. BLT respectively) and sorry the other guys didn't ...

I suppose, simply because so much other racing action was taking place.

That said, I have 1 question & 1 suggestion ... with CMTBnm class.
  • Question: Is the meaning of the letters TB ... Time Bracket?
  • Suggestion: Why not drop the "nm" at the end of the class names, mainly how it is fully understood slot-cars will be setup as Non-Magnetic.
I will end off here and you'll may see me at the next event ... with 2 of my own set-up (non-mag) BTCC and GT cars :!:

06. RD358 - BTCC, GT & LMP ... planning on Sat 2nd May 2026
05. RD357 - CMTB ... made a planned visit ... Sat 11 April 2026
04. RD356 - RC & KB ... made a surprised visit ... Sat 28 March 2026
03. RD355 - HS, APC & MP
02. RD354 - SC & CM
01. RD353 - BTCC, GT & LMP / D510 & RevoSlot
