Race report #96 - Thursday 15th March, 2012

RACE REPORT FOR MARCH 15TH 2012

The afternoon started off looking like rain would spoil our inaugural Ferrari Team Challenge event. As usual, O'Brie dropped in early to help me set things up but couldn't stay as he was feeling a bit under the weather. Luckily, the afternoon rain stopped and never prevented us from having what turned into a really enjoyable evening of racing. Besides the planned six FTC races we also had three Modified Production races on the card.

Before leaving, O'Brie joined me in testing the Ferraris for the first time and it was immediately apparent that with the stock 18,000 RPM motors and wide Maxxtrac silicone tyres, the cars could do most of the lap flat out - not a good thing for exciting racing. I quickly called Luke who hadn't left home and asked him to bring the stock rubber tyres which we switched to, making the cars a little more challenging to drive. We decided at that point that we would change the motors to ones with a bit more power and reinstall the silicones for the next event.

Nine drivers turned up but Kyle had to leave before the racing began, although he did do some driving while present. The eight remaining qualified the FTC cars in two groups of four, choosing cars by roll of a dice, with the fastest six running the first race and the usual cycling of the last two drivers. Once the top six were established, the cars they would race and teams they would belong to were again decided by the rolling of a dice, leaving everything completely up to chance and therefore as fair as possible. The resulting teams were (in Italian, of course):
  • Scuderia Blu (Blue) - Luke and Alex
  • Scuderia Giallo (Yellow) - Steve and I
  • Scuderia Rosso (Red) - Paul and Arden
Standby drivers - Aaron and Kerwin

Luke and Alex had proven they meant business by qualifying first and second, respectively, making it a Scuderia Blu front row for the first race. Paul took third for Scuderia Rosso while I was fourth for Scuderia Giallo. Arden (Scuderia Rosso) and Steve (Scuderia Giallo) completed the grid and the action began. Once the lights went green it was clear that racing would be very close and high finishing places would go to those who were able to keep up the pace without deslotting.

As the races progressed, Kerwin and Aaron would drive for both Scuderia Blu and Scuderia Rosso. In the end it was not entirely clear which was the winning team without having the computer run the numbers, but everyone agreed that it was a whole lot of fun. One interesting apect was the willingness of team members to help each other out on deslots, actually distracting themselves to reslot a team member whose car was deslotteed nearby. The team concept seems to have been very successful and can only get better as its refined.

Five MP cars took to the track after the last FTC race, however Arden had to withdraw when the Mini I lent him blew its F1 chip, leaving just four to run the three races. These races were quite close too and reminiscent of the fast classes like American Muscle where speed is concerned (or maybe it was the contrast between them and the relatively slow FTC cars that gave this impression).

Without a doubt though, the stars of the event were the FTC races and they produced a range of ways of looking at the results. In the end though, the important result was the overall team results - the champion team of the event.

Congratulations to the winners.

Next event's classes: Porsche Cup - 6 races @ 30 laps, Historic Saloon - 3 races @ 30 laps (270 total laps for all classes). Don't forget to see the updated fastest times for the FRC classes to know what the benchmarks are for your cars. Also of interest are the updated class average qualifying times.

See you on the circuit...

FRC Team Championship Points...

Post by Luke »

I agree with you Steve that this (1st. of its kind) is another great race report by Gordon :D

 The only suggestion/point I would still like to make with this FTC class is, if there are more than 6 racers and with this event being a team effort... If you look at the Teams/Champs results with the extra drivers number 7 & 8 on the Blue Team as well as the Red Team, it looks kind of strange in black and white.

We at race night know how they got there because they took over of the fifth and sixth positions on the grid after a race.

A best case scenario "in colours  " of mines with 9 racers by colour teams:

Team YELLOW ...1 & 2
Team BLUE .......3 & 4
Team RED .........5 & 6

These extra 3 drivers after a race, replaces the second placed position driver of their respective team.

YELLOW ....7
BLUE ........8
RED .........9

If we go to 10 racers, this person will be team yellow and means drivers 7 & 10 will race the 2nd. race for team yellow and drivers 1 & 2 will be the 3rd. race and so on...

GG how does this sound... for your next FRC FTC Report?

I think there is merit in what Luke is proposing but there are pros and cons to both this and the existing system.
Pro: With the existing system, replacement drivers will always start at the back of the grid as they replace the poorest finishers of the previous race. With the proposed system, a 3rd. driver on a team would benefit from the finishing position of the 2nd.place driver of the previous race. This grid position could be as high as 2nd (not 1st, obviously).
Con: A poor finish by the lead driver of a particular team may see that driver racing in the subsequent race with only his team mate being replaced. Let's, for arguments sake , say team Yellow finished a race in 5th and 6th, the driver finishing 6th. would have to make way for a replacement in the next race but the one finishing 5th. would race again immediately after. The second place drivers in the 2 other teams would also have to be cycled out to make way for their replacements. Is it fair to them to have to stand aside but the driver finishing 5th. be allowed in the next race ?
Someting to think about.

Steve, reply well said but as you said, there is a "but"...

Yes... There are pros & cons but the point is ~ lets say a car in the RED,YELLOW & BLUE team is in 2nd, 4th and 6th place (and this is only 1 racing situation result) positions have replacement drivers for 2nd place in each team, this shouldn't be an issue because (looking in, outside the box "frc track" ;) in this case) we have to realize that the 3 TEAMS are now competing... with a (the best case scenario) number 3 driver.

Think about this for a few seconds ~ On race night, you are on the RED TEAM and you'll are doing well in the standings after 3 races and all of a sudden you will be racing for the BLUE TEAM instead and they may not be doing well too... How are you to perform taking part in (and during) a FRC FTC racing competition and have to change team colours..?

Have a nice day :D

Guys,

I think that the simplest solution to any problem is usually the best. That said, here's what I propose:
  • Once qualifying is done and the first race 6-car grid has been established, let the extra driver(s) draw for a team (colour) to establish their team for the event.
  • After each race, the extra driver (for each team that has one) replaces the lower-placed driver of the same team.
Now I haven't thought through all the permutations, but it seems to me that this is the simplest and fairest solution to everyone only driving for one team at these events.

Gordon ~ Guess you are back in TnT... Did you get to meet any of Hamilton's family :D

How you like how I'm using up the colouring font 8-) hehehehe

 Simple Solutions... Way to Go :!:

Your solution to this FRC class with the extra drivers is the way to go being a total racing effort of 3 teams and I know, the putting of things in order to make this happen will not be much of a problem for you.

:?: Do you have any plans for FRC'S 100th. Racing Event :?:

Luke, I hadn't thought of it, but it is a milestone. I'm going to do a separate post for everyone to make suggestions.

I agree with Gordon. We should all be racing for a specific team.
On another note.
Digital racing is the closing slot racing game to real racing. In real racing if there is an accident there is a yellow flag and every one slows down. This will make you aware of what is going on the track also your team driver should be talking to you about an incident ahead. The team drivers should be also next to one another if they arn't already.
If you are racing team events i believe the drivers should reslot their own car. It will slow down everyone however you will be getting closer to the real thing. You will also avoid a driver from another team from resloting your car slowly especially if you are in the last lap and in a duel with another team.
This is just a suggestion. It will also encourage drivers like myself not to crash and learn to drive.

Luke,Steve you all have good comments. Luke you really do have a passion for racing and alot of good observations.
Keep up the good work!

Southboy.
