FRC Session Report, Saturday 7th November 2020

Post by gordon »

Steve, Keith and O'Brie joined me at FRC for another COVID session at FRC. Jimmy also came by as a spectator. We were focused on doing some races, so although we got started a bit late, we managed to get the races done basically as planned.

We started off with Kitbash qualifying with the following results:

1st 9.079 sec - Steve, Ford Cosworth Sierra
2nd 9.213 sec - O'Brie, Peugeot 205
3rd 9.445 sec - Gordon, NSU TT
4th 9.947 sec - Keith, Chevy Lumina

We then immediately lined up for the first race:

There was a lot of action during the three races which included several incidents. In this first one, my NSU and Keith's Lumina sandwich O'Brie's Peugeot in a crash at Fosters:

In another incident, my NSU, Keith's Lumina and Steve's Sierra have a coming together leaving all stranded out of the slots:

More action as Steve leads O'Brie and Keith in the middle section of FRC:

Results:

Race 1
1st - Steve
2nd - O'Brie
3rd - Gordon
4th - Keith

Race 2
1st - Steve
2nd - O'Brie
3rd - Gordon
4th - Keith

Race 3
1st - Steve
2nd - O'Brie
3rd - Gordon
4th - Keith

We then moved on to BTCC - No magnet, with the following qualifying results:

1st 9.108 sec - Gordon, MG6
2nd 9.162 sec - Steve, BMW 125
3rd 9.814 sec - O'Brie, Honda Civic

BTCC race 1 grid:

Results:

Race 1
1st - Gordon
2nd - Steve
3rd - O'Brie

Race 2
1st - Steve
2nd - Gordon
3rd - O'Brie

Race 3
1st - Gordon
2nd - Steve
3rd - O'Brie

At this point, it was getting a bit late and both O'Brie and Keith had to leave. Determined to finish the schedule, Steve and I moved onto Clubman with the following qualifying results:

1st 9.332 sec - Steve, MGB
2nd 9.351 sec - Gordon, BMC Mini Cooper

Clubman race 1 grid:

We included the requirement of each race winner adding 3gm ballast and had four races, unfortunately hampered by my Mini deslotting several times, primarily at Fosters and the Carousel. At the end these were the results:

Results:

Race 1
1st - Steve
2nd - Gordon

Race 2
1st - Steve (+ 3gm)
2nd - Gordon

Race 3
1st - Steve (+ 3gm)
2nd - Gordon

Race 4
1st - Steve (switched car to BMW 2002)
2nd - Gordon

At the end of the evening Steve's BMW weighed in at 96gm, the weight the car will have to start the next Clubman race at. We forgot to weigh his last-race winning BMW before packing up so we'll have to trust him to weigh it as it ran and advise us of the weight. The next time it runs, it will have to have 3gm added.

It was another enjoyable session where we started to really get back into racing, which its really all about.

Great afternoon and evening of racing at FRC. As I've said before, I really enjoy driving these non-mag cars and getting to actually race them puts the icing on the cake. I was a little apprehensive about the BTCC cars without magnets but wow, did they surprise us ! Gordon and I brought our cars already prepared but O'Brie showed up with his in its previous magnetized guise. Within a very short space of time he was able to remove the magnet and perform some simple tweaks to have it running very competitively. I was generally pleased with the performance of all of my cars, including the Chevy Lumina driven by Keith. Seems like the big V8 needs some more power tho handle those pesky four cylinders though !
Gordon, the weight of the BMW 2002 as raced is 96.5 g. I will add the appropriate weight to this and the MGB before the next session.
